So on Monday this week, Cory didn't have to work because of Australia Day. So we decided to take a little trip with the kids down the main street in Kalgoorlie, Historic Hannan Street. There really wasn't much to see, its a small town, but it was fun nonetheless.
This is when we first parked and got out of the car. The girls decided to pose as statues on this bench. Don't ask me why!
Here is one view of the main street. That tall building is a clock tower.
Here is the fountain at the main square.
So this fountain is surrounded by these little plaques telling the legend of this lady standing in the middle. It was a very depressing legend, but this is how is goes. Legend has it that this woman was going to be force to marry a non Christian Prince and apparently it was very important to her to marry a Christian. So she ran away and hid in the mines. The miners protected her and took care of her. But one day when she came out of the mines to get some water, her father captured her and beheaded her himself. A little creepy if you ask me, but there is a little history for ya!
Behind this fountain there was a gazebo.
It made for a fun place to play.
It was surrounded by water.
There was a shopping cart in the water, which was a huge concern to my kids.
So Cory pulled it out and they put it back where it should go.
No coin throwing into these fountains, just gum tree bark, beer cans, and shopping carts.
All the stores were closed since it was a holiday, so the square was pretty dead.
There was this cool mosaic. With hidden pictures in it. Can you see the trail of footprints?
The girls put on a show, which consisted of Lily drumming on that drinking fountain and Ava singing "Head, shoulders, knees and toes."
All these posts were topped with shiny "gold" and all the trash bins were lined with it too. Classy place we're living in. Who knows it could be real!
Cory was chatting it up with the long boarding locals. I've never seen long boards that look like this before, but they worked.
Here are some more buildings and things along the Main Historic Hannan Street.
A lot buildings reminded me of the Czech Republic.
This is not only a cool little statue of a miner, but is it also a drinking fountain. Look closely and see if you can find where the drinking fountain is. Cory refused to let the girls use it, however, because he has seen many a aboriginal bathe in it!
So that concludes our tour of Kalgoorlie town.
Oh Noelle, you've started my day off with a good laugh. love the performance by Ava and Lily, love the poses, love the extra bizarre statue story, and I love there is NO ONE around on the nation's holiday- cool down town, looks like there are some cool old buildings
