Bugs and other Creepy Crawlies

So Australia is known for a lot of different species of bugs and dangerous ones too!  Luckily, we haven't encountered any poisonous bugs and just one poisonous snake!  The snake just slithered off, thankfully!  On my first day in Kalgoorlie, I killed 7 spiders in our house and don't get me started on the ants!  We live on a giant ant hill.  Our house is just in their way.  Here are a few pics of some fun bugs and creatures we have captured.

So nobody uses a clothes dryer here.  Everyone just hangs their clothes out to dry on the line.  It's so hot here they dry in no time, at least at this time of year.  So one day I was doing a lot of laundry.  So I was hanging clothes out and taking them down and I looked up and noticed these two friends above me.

I figured they were harmless so I just let them be, but that praying mantis began to creep me out.  I kid you not, his big eyes were following my every move.  I could visibly see him move his head every where I went.  It was seriously creepy!!  It was giving me the heebie jeebies!  Luckily, he was gone the next day.  If he didn't leave of his own free will I was getting ready to move him myself.  He was quite the stalker.
See look how he is staring me down right now?  Those eyes would just follow me everywhere!

This beastly spider, known as the Huntsman, crawled out of a tree when we were in Esperance.

This spider to me is like not even an insect any more (or whatever spiders are), this thing is like a small animal or rodent!

We saw this goanna lizard on the side of the road.  It was so cool!

Lastly, there's the cockroaches!  Eww!!  One day we were out swimming and Will loves to open the skimmer box and look inside.  It's something he sees Cory doing, so I think he feel like it's the manly thing to do.  So he kept pointing to something and jabbering on about it and then he'd close it and open it again and do the same thing.  So I finally decided to see what was in there about at the same time that Will was reaching for what ever it was.  Well it was a huge brown cockroach with super long antenna.  It was disgusting and I screamed.  Will was a little shocked that I reacted like that to something that he thought was a little friend.  So I decided it was time to get rid of it.  I tried to just flick it away, and it ran straight into the pool!  I thought maybe it would drown, but no, that bad boy could swim!  So I scooped it up on a kick board and threw it over my fence into the neighbors yard!  Gross!  Gladly, I have no pictures of that!

I'm sure we have many more bugs and creatures to discover!  Can't wait!

  1. No my goodness that is the BIGGEST praying mantis I have ever seen. At least 3x larger than what we usually have around here.

    1. Yeah, Neal, all the bugs here are on steroids, I swear! They are bigger and faster than any of ours in America! I forgot to mention the insane flies that will land on you and try to crawl in any opening they can find and they are not easily diverted. You have to practically smack yourself in the face to get rid of them! We have lazy flies in America, and thank goodness.

  2. Oh the Cockroaches! When we first moved out to NC. Joslyn and I would freeze and let out an involuntary scream everytime we saw one. They are HUGE! Now, our blood still turns to ice, but we just smash them. Have you treated your house with bug spray or had a pest control treatment?

    1. I'm still in the involuntary scream stage! They make me so sick for hours every time! Cory got some heavy duty spray, but he hasn't sprayed the house yet. We need it! I haven't been able to smash them yet, anything that can crunch is too much for me! I spray them with pesticide then sweep them into the outside garbage. Dad told me that he would boil them!

  3. All right! We now have something not to be envious about with you guys living down under! Do you think you'll ever get use to all of those bugs?

  4. Ewww! I would not even be able to sleep knowing there were giant creepy bugs outside my door. Shawn took a few pictures of giant spiders and cockroaches when he was there for 3 weeks. It was so gross. Hopefully you'll be able to get used to them.

    1. Every time I see a cockroach I'm creeped out for hours and I still scream every time! They are just so nasty! I don't know if I will ever get used to them! That is something I will be happy about when we come back to Utah-no cockroaches!!

  5. Oh my goodness! That is gross. If I see a spider in the house that is big enough to make a crunching noise when squished I can't do it! I stick a glass on top of it and wait for Matt to come to kill it. Pitiful! I don't know if I'd survive in the outback! My friend had her house overtaken by ants and she tried this http://www.food.com/recipe/get-rid-of-ants-ants-ants-203233 and it worked! Her's were terrible too. The second a kid dropped a crumb the ants would come swarming out. I'm sure it wouldn't solve the problem forever because of where you live but it worked for her.

    1. Thanks for the ant remedy, Kelli, I will be sure to try it as soon as I find boric acid! I can't smash anything that will crunch either. I spray it with pesticide and sweep it into the outside dumpster. Luckily the biggest spiders found in the house are daddy long legs! Its the cockroaches I can't stand!

  6. Please don't start me on having "fly crawling up my nose" nightmares... I am super grateful for our lazy bugs; I will sing their praises.
